This course is designed for individuals looking to renew their COSS competency. It encompasses the following areas: Personal Track Safety recertification, Planning Safe System of Work, Delivering briefings, and both Theory and Practical and Verbal assessments.

Aims & Objectives

Upon successful completion, participants will be able to:

  • Accurately interpret relevant sections of the Rule Book and pertinent Railway Group Standards when performing as a COSS.
  • Understand and set up a Safe System of Work before allowing any group of staff to work on or near the track.


Candidates are required to have:

  • A minimum of 4 endorsed entries in their COSS work experience log book, validated by their line manager or supervisor.
  • For those holding the PC competency, at least 2 PC entries in the log book are necessary.
  • A valid Sentinel card endorsed with PTS, COSS, and DCCR.
  • An up-to-date drugs and alcohol and medical assessment (minimum medical level 4).

On Completion

When applicable, once you successfully complete your course or assessment, a member of our staff will update your competency in the Sentinel system. You can order your Sentinel smart cards directly from Sentinel at Please note that this will incur an additional cost which you will be responsible for covering.
