The SMSTS Initial course is tailored for individuals contemplating or already possess responsibilities in planning, organising, monitoring, controlling, and administering staff, such as site managers. This course delves into the pertinent legislation impacting safe operations within the building, construction, and civil engineering sectors. It emphasises the importance of risk assessment at work, the execution of essential control measures, and efficient communication to foster a health and safety culture within the workforce. This course is recognised and endorsed by Build UK as the standard training for all construction managers.

Aims & Objectives

Upon concluding the course, participants will be equipped to:

  • Implement all health, safety, welfare, and environmental legislation affecting their everyday work.
  • Introduce new guidance and industry best practices.
  • Understand and articulate their duties and responsibilities about health, safety, welfare, and the environment.


Certification for this course remains valid for five years. To retain certification in this domain, participants must undertake a refresher course before the expiration date on their certificate. Failing to do so will necessitate retaking the entire course.
