Embarking on a career change can be daunting, but for Dinesh Patel, it became an opportunity to pursue his passion for design and engineering in the rail sector. In this case study, we delve into Dinesh’s remarkable journey with INFRA Skills Ltd, where he found the training and support needed to excel in the industry.

Discovering INFRA Skills Ltd

With a background in design and engineering, Dinesh sought a new career within the rail sector. Attending an apprenticeship event at Wolverhampton Civic Hall, he met Rachel Green, Business Development Manager for INFRA Skills. Together, they explored the Construction Gateway Programme—a fully-funded training opportunity in partnership with the West Midlands Combined Authority. Dinesh recognized the program as a chance to gain valuable qualifications and experience in both rail and construction.

Training with INFRA Skills

Dinesh underwent the training program at INFRA Skills’ office in Aston, complemented by on-track experience at Adderley Park and the Severn Valley Railway in Bewdley. Guided by experienced trainers Steve Cox and Jordan May, Dinesh found their interactive teaching style engaging and inclusive for the diverse group of learners. Throughout the course, he had the chance to work for RSS Infrastructure (RSSI) and showcase his competencies. Dinesh’s hard work and reliability led to an immediate job offer from RSS Infrastructure upon completing the program.

Working with RSSI

Since joining RSS Infrastructure, Dinesh has had the opportunity to work in various divisions, including Track Access and Lighting, Arboriculture, and Fleet. His dedication and skill set were recognized by Graham Talbot, Head of RSSI Arboriculture, who encouraged him to complete his Chain Saw Ticket and consider joining the Arboriculture division. Dinesh is now focused on gaining more arboriculture qualifications and advancing his career within RSSI.

Future Aspirations

With an eagerness to progress, Dinesh envisions becoming a ‘White hat’ and a team leader within RSS Infrastructure. He also aims to apply for an apprenticeship with Colas Rail, aspiring to become a qualified Hand back Engineer or an OLEC3 Engineer. Dinesh’s dedication, attention to detail, and expanding skill set position him well for these roles. Moreover, he has recently applied to become a local councillor for the Black Country Party, aiming to advocate for the railway and transportation sector in the region.

Conclusion

Dinesh’s journey with INFRA Skills Ltd and RSS Infrastructure has opened his eyes to the vast array of roles and possibilities in the rail industry. The comprehensive training program, coupled with employment prospects, has provided him with an unparalleled career opportunity.
