Ellis Robinson Case Study

Ellis Robinson Case Study

In this case study, we explore Ellis Robinson’s journey through the Construction Gateway program and how he effectively applied his talents and military experiences to excel in the construction industry.

Before the Construction Gateway

Before embarking on the Construction Gateway, Ellis served in the Mercian Regiment as a Front-Line Infantry Soldier, completing a tour of Afghanistan in 2013/2014. After four years in the British Army, he sought a new career and considered the rail industry, which had piqued his interest prior to joining the military. However, it was the Construction Gateway that ultimately provided him with an excellent opportunity to leverage his existing skills and experiences for employment.

Training Experience with INFRA Skills

INFRA Skills offered a comprehensive training program spanning four weeks. Ellis found the training engaging and particularly enjoyed the practical aspects, such as Track Induction and Small Tools. Paul Geddes, his trainer, made the program enjoyable and captivating, drawing from his own rail industry experiences to enhance the participants’ knowledge and understanding.

Current Endeavors in the Rail Industry

Having successfully completed the program, Ellis secured a position with a Birmingham-based rail recruitment company, utilizing the skills and competencies he acquired through training with INFRA Skills. He highlights the similarities between the rail industry and the military in terms of structure, discipline, and regimented work processes. This resemblance has facilitated a smooth transition for Ellis into civilian life and working within the rail sector.

Future Plans and Education

While continuing his rail work, Ellis intends to pursue higher education. In October, he will commence studying ‘Philosophy and Psychology’ at the Open University. He is enthusiastic about this field of work and believes it will open up abundant opportunities for him in the future. The flexible nature of rail work allows him to accommodate night shifts and weekends, ensuring a balance between his education and employment.

Recommendation for Armed Forces Veterans

Ellis highly recommends the Construction Gateway training program to other Armed Forces veterans, especially those who served in the private ranks. He emphasizes the program’s value in facilitating a seamless transition between the military and civilian industries. The similarities he found between the two sectors have greatly aided his adaptation to civilian life.
