The revitalisation of the West Midlands Metro has created numerous opportunities and benefits to the local area, not only has it created new prospects for local workers to find stable and skilled work, it has also created the opportunity for skilled people from all around the country to come to the Black Country and share their expertise. Our latest team are no different, Shaun and Nichola have recently been recruited, as a civil team of two, by RSS Infrastructure to construct steel cages for the expansion of the West Midlands Metro being undertaken by the Midland Metro Alliance. Beginning work on 10 September, with an expected duration of two to three weeks, the purpose of the work was to raise the platform in preparation for the concrete.
Shaun and Nichola however are a unique partnership, being the first husband and wife team to work for RSS Infrastructure. Nichola has not always had a career in steel fixing, when Shaun was let down by a colleague one day, he convinced her to try her hand at something new. Having had no prior experience in the industry before, Nichola turned out to be a natural, and with the help of a great teacher went on to gain her CSCS card and complete an NVQ Level 2.
Travelling the country together in their motorhome, Shaun and Nicola complete projects all over the UK, wherever they are needed. One of the largest projects they have worked on was for McGinley’s, constructing cages for the Bet 365 Headquarters in Stoke-on-Trent. Being the only steel fixers on site, they were constructing up to five cages a day, and the work lasted between six and seven months.
Shaun and Nichola both thoroughly enjoy their work, with every job being different. Through their years of experience, they have a vast knowledge of the work and materials needed to suit any job, so the ability to think ahead, sometimes having to tweak or redesign plans to make the cages fit for purpose, is the couples main selling point.
The couple may have a unique working relationship, but that does not stop them from coming home after each shift to discuss their day or the next project. Shaun and Nichola make sure to separate work and their personal life as best as they can, so when they are not having some well-deserved down time, they are enjoying each other’s company, like any other couple.
